Why Weddings?

"Now join your hands, and with your hands your hearts."

For me, photographing weddings is about connecting. It's about sharing joy. It's about storytelling. It's about crafting your first family heirloom. And it's about giving back.

Your wedding day is a remarkable moment in time when for one special day, two families' stories will converge and become one. It's the day when all the people you hold dear in your hearts will gather to celebrate with you, before they send you out into the world as a brand new family. It's the moment in time that you stand together, vowing to move through the universe with all its glories and challenges, no longer thinking of just yourselves. And as you stand together and commit your lives to one another, your family and friends also make a commitment to both of you -- by blessing your union with their love, sharing their wisdom and guidance, celebrating with you in the good times, lifting you up and supporting you during the challenging times, they will help your family grow strong. On a wedding day, we are at our very best, authentically connecting with one another, experiencing true joy, living in the moment, sharing our hearts. And when you think about it, this may be the only time all of these very special people will be in the same place, at the same time, for the same reason. It's without a doubt a day worth documenting!

So many of my clients devote their lives to serving others. They're teachers, social workers, physicians, nurses, firefighters, members of the armed forces, and devoted community volunteers. In truth, they're nothing short of everyday heroes. It's such an honor to get to share their wedding day with them -- to show up, camera in hand, and capture the memories of one of their very best days. Using my creativity and heart for storytelling to document such a significant moment in their family history is my way of giving back and saying "Thank You" for being so awesome!

My Philosophy

My Philosophy

“I slept and I dreamed that life is all joy. I woke and I saw that life is all service. I served and I saw that service is joy.”

My philosophy is simple:

We are all connected. We belong to one another.
And everyone has a story worth telling.

We all want to feel connected to our past...to have a sense of where we came from. Family heirlooms have the power to connect us to our past, and they have the power to connect us to future generations.

I believe that photographs are a powerful way to stay connected to our memories, and your wedding day is beyond a shadow of a doubt a day worth remembering. Even a snapshot has the power to transport us to another place and time, but an artfully made photograph captures the essence of a moment. When you invest in your wedding photography, the collection of those moments – of those stories – is sure to become a cherished family heirloom.

I also believe that the most beautiful weddings are a true celebration of a marriage. I love pretty dresses, sparkly shoes, fluffy white wedding cake, and big bouquets of floral gorgeousness as much as the next girl – maybe more. But unlike a strong marriage, those things won't get you through the sleepless nights with a colicky baby, see you through the loss of a job or the launch of a new business, or keep you warm on a cold winter's night. Unlike the love of your life, those things can't make you laugh until your sides hurt; they won't cry with you when you feel the devastation of defeat; and they will never see -- and love without condition -- the real you. It's easy to get caught up in the details of planning a beautiful party, but in truth, when you're doing the work to build a beautiful life together, however you choose to celebrate your union is bound to be amazing.

I love wedding photography because it is the perfect marriage of service and art. I believe that we all have a responsibility to use our special gifts to serve one another, and as a storyteller, I'm continually working to perfect the art of telling stories through photos. At the same time, I aim to serve my clients from my heart -- taking the time to get to know them and establishing a foundation of friendship and trust. I've found that when my clients and I have a strong personal connection, my clients are rewarded with the creative, emotive and timeless wedding photos that they will cherish and that they deserve.

I approach wedding day storytelling with a blend of photojournalistic and editorial coverage. Through candid, in-the-moment photos, we get to see the story of your wedding day unfold exactly as it happened, and by taking the time to create editorial-style portraits, we get to focus in on your "Story of Us."

When you choose me to photograph your wedding day, you're entrusting me to tell the story of one of the most monumental, defining, joy-filled days of your life, and you're investing in your first family heirloom. Documenting your story is as important to me as it is to you, and I aim to see your day through your eyes and capture it in a way that reflects your vision.

In the months leading up to your wedding, I'll take the time to get to know you -- your story, your style, what makes you unique. I'll help guide you through the planning process and help you crafting a timeline that allows us to squeeze in all the important, non-candid photos without feeling rushed -- a timeline that allows you to be fully present in each fleeting moment of your big day. And when I show up on your wedding day, my hope is that you'll feel like I'm not just your wedding photographer, but a dear friend who's there to bless and celebrate your marriage with you.

On your wedding day, I'll capture the laughter and happy tears, the inside jokes and the raw emotions that abound. I'll create opportunities for you to take a minute, drink in the day, relish how everything has finally come together, and truly connect with one another. And I will feel honored and blessed to capture all the moments -- from the big, celebratory ones to the quiet "moments between the moments" -- as you begin the next chapter in your story.

Those who know me best know that I'm a list maker, so it seems only fitting that to help you to get to know me better, I would make you a list. Here are 10 random facts about me...in no order of importance.

  1. I'm a mom to two amazing little girls, affectionately known as Little Miss (age 9) and Sister Sue (almost 8). Being a mom is without a doubt the most challenging and rewarding thing I think I will ever do in my life, and I'm so thankful every day for the opportunity to raise these girls.

  2. I'm a Midwestern girl at heart, right down to the way that I vacation. Vacations are meant for visiting your favorite people, not just going to cool places. Visiting your favorite people in cool places? Now that's vacationing in style!

  3. I think whoever the first person was to try combining peanut butter and chocolate was a sheer genius and ought to get their very own national holiday!

  4. I'm a life-long Girl Scout and currently lead Little Miss's Junior troop and Sister Sue's Brownie troop. You might think I'm just in it for the cookies (which might hold a tiny bit of truth -- who doesn't love Thin Mints?), but mostly I just think it's so important to give our girls a safe and encouraging place to explore who they are and the world around them. As a Girl Scout leader, I get to instill in these girls' minds the notion that "Girls can do ANYTHING" -- a message that will hopefully stay with them and empower them throughout their lives. How awesome is that?

  5. Just because I'm a Girl Scout doesn't mean I know how to camp, but I'm learning! In 2016, I became "camp certified," so I can take these wild and crazy Girl Scouts out to camp and conquer the wilderness. We had our first troop camping adventure in October 2016, and it was amazing witnessing the girls soak in nature, cook over a campfire, and survive 40 degree nights in sleeping bags -- many of them for the first time. They were troopers, and I can't wait to camp with them again!

  6. My heart is most peaceful when I'm in the mountains or near the sea.

  7. I collect Mark Twain quotes. That man was blessed with incredible insight, sharp wit and quite a knack for weaving a tale. What I wouldn't give to have had the pleasure of sitting across the dinner table from him, being entertained and soaking in his wit and wisdom. There's a quote attributed to him that more than once I've kept taped to my bathroom mirror: "Do the thing you fear most, and the death of fear is certain." Words to live by, right?

  8. I have a serious case of wanderlust. In addition to many, many trips to see family and friends across the U.S., my bucket list contains lots of travel, including Machu Picchu, France, Italy, Spain, Alaska, Maine, and of course Disney World with the kiddos. I also can't wait to recreate with the girls a road trip I took with my grandparents when I was 11 years old to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks.

  9. Other bucket list highlights include finishing my first novel (which is currently in progress), learn to play the guitar, photograph an elopement in Paris, and learn to knit.

  10. I love to read, and I read a lot. I generally stick to fiction -- I love getting lost in a good story. I dream of one day being able to call one designated room in my home "The Library." I picture a room filled with floor to ceiling books, complete with a library ladder so we can reach those volumes shelved up high, and on one wall, there's a giant picture window with the comfy-coziest window seat where I can curl up to read an entire day away while soaking up the warmth of the sun.
